Reef Rangers

Sustainable livelihood for local communities

Reef rangers are REEFolution’s backbone supporting day-to-day coral reef restoration work from building artificial reef structures, deployment, harvesting ‘corals of opportunity’, outplanting and monitoring as well as marine education outreach program. We strive to empower the local communities with sustainable and alternative livelihood opportunities.

4 steps

Apply & select

Most of the rangers start out as volunteers or students on internship who show enthusiasm to partake in implementation of our restoration activities and are then absorbed into the program. During the phase of being volunteers and interns, they are able to participate in non-diving restoration activities, education programme while sharpening their benthic and fish identification skills.

As candidate you need to be able to swim and snorkel. REEFolution does provide swimmings classes for the ones that need it.

Prepare & Educate

The course is approximately 2 months equally devided in building fish – and benthic knowledge. During this times you are paired with one of our brilliant rangers.

The fish and benthic identification tests are categorized in three levels named bronze, silver and gold. To be a restoration ranger, you need the bronze level certification, when involved in research a silver certification is acquired.

Theory into practice

When certain certification are met, a ranger will undertake their first restoration dives, accompanied by a dive instructor. With the right experience and practice a candidate will apply for a PADI coral restoration course which will make them more efficient in their work.

Certified Reef Ranger

With the different certificates you are a competent restoration diver. A true value for REEFolution and the reef. A ranger can support all of our pillar activities within coral restoration, education and research.
